A Few Extras
With two football losses in hand (one really bad, one ok), I saved the best part of my weekend for last. Cubbie, Turducken, and LSF came over for the HBO season premier of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” followed by the HBO/BBC series premier of “Extras” starring Ricky Gervais.
I must’ve really wanted to laugh because seeing Larry David “drowning” in the opening scene had my sides in stitches. Maybe a little bit too much yelling in that show, but its all super funny. Plus, I didn’t know what Sable was until last night. “Extras” is a show that might be a little too British for my tastes, but one that I am pretty sure will grow on me throughout the season. Some of the concepts are the same, where Ricky Gervais is the socially inappropriate counterpart of Larry David (but not nearly as inflammatory). The story follows the lives of a couple extras on different movie sets, which leaves the opportunity for various famous guest stars. Yesterday Kate Winslet played herself playing a nun, and next week Ben Stiller will be guest starring. I think that “Extras” should prove to be bloody good, but hopefully not too British.
Also, I am extremely juiced for Tuesday night’s Cubs v. Pirates at Wrigley. It’s going to be Duke vs. Maddux, and perhaps I needlessly say that Maddux will be going for his 14th win tomorrow. A win he will need in order to reach 15 this season. Maddux has had 15 wins 17 seasons a row, an astonishing stat, and was granted the start on Tuesday with three days rest to help make it 18. Duke beat Maddux the first time around, and this has the classic makings of a youth vs. experience showdown. At 1.94 right now, I’d love for Duke to finish the season with an ERA under 2.00.
