Gurs Appleseed

Lucky me because I just finished a fresh apple with fat free caramel dip at my desk. The 2 oz of caramel in the single serve packet is super-convenient, but also way too much. After the first half of the apple, I had finished maybe 0.5 oz. So I was left to finish the last 1.5 oz with the second half of the apple. And believe it or not, I did it, but only with a little extra help from some of the red and green grapes sitting at my desk. By the way, grapes and caramel aren’t really the best of friends. My keyboard is also mostly sticky now.

There has also been a lot of talk recently from my mother’s end about the apple pie that she has commissioned me to make over Thanksgiving. She keeps asking me if my apple pie is the best in the county, and I believe when she asks me that, that she is poking fun at me. I just happened to mention over the summer to my parents that one of the Wisconsin beer barons claimed my fresh cherry pie (with Door County cherries) was better than any he had ever had in Door County. And I really think that means something coming from a beer baron. I asked Shah if the baron was sincere, and at that time he confirmed that the baron wasn’t exaggerating. Almost instantaneously I was overwhelmed with a sense of personal pride and satisfaction, and thusly the story lives on.

Well, anyway, I need to get some practice apple pies in before the big show in Pittsburgh in November. Whoever is around the square this fall is in for a real treat. Second round of pies is scheduled for consumption October 28-30. That is Homecoming Weekend, and they will be served as dessert after we devour fresh wolverine pot pies for the main course.

Unfortunately, none of our Pirates tidbit suggestions to Dejan Kovacevic were chosen, so we will have to wait another time for that Thai Iced Tea. Dejan ended up going with “Buried Treasure”, and that’s what I think these Buccos are. Last night’s Pirates Cubs baseball game was all that I could ask for in a meaningless September game. Celebrate the old and in with the new.
