Bonus for First Read in a Long Time

Here is an old entry from 11/18/02. I know we are nearing the end of winter, but I wanted to provide a little bit of an extra treat. This is hard-hitting.

It also appears that I used to write in all lowercase. How uncouth.

i think it's important to be frank. the winter is coming and it would please me greatly to see everyone well-prepared for this harshest of seasons. therefore, i have composed a short list of winter essentials that can make these next several months more enjoyable for everyone involved. remember, even though a penny saved is a penny earned, no price can be put on having appropriate winter gear.

1. hat. everyone needs a winter hat. the keys to a good hat are one that is able to maintain an inner warm capsule even against strong winter gales and one that has good ear coverage. while finding a stylish hat may seem important, please do not overlook functionality. potential substitutes include the winter headband and earmuffs for those concerned about messing up their hair, but the latter is definitely not recommended for most climates.

2. gloves. we all love our hands so let's act like we do, too. get a good pair of gloves and you will thank yourself every time you step outside. try to find a pair where you have some level of dexterity with the gloves on. taking off your gloves for every small activity can really put a damper on good insulation. cuff coverage is also desirable.

3. scarf. i will argue that this is the most overlooked yet essential winter-protection component. a good scarf will prevent wind drafts from blowing into the top of your coat, and if worn properly will cover your entire neck and, if desired, your lower face as well. there are several ways to wear a scarf, but a description of those methods is well beyond the scope of this list.

4. lip balm. protect your lips like you do any other part of your body. chapped bloody lips can be painful to yourself and unattractive to others.

5. hand moisturizer. primary prevention against hangnails. let's get them this year before they start.

6. thick socks. this is especially important if you live in a house/apartment with cold floors. often times your entire body will feel cold when it is just your feet that are cold. sometimes i even wear shoes indoors if the situation really gets out of control.

7. hot cocoa packets and canned chicken soup. there is no match for warm liquids in your body after a long trek through the frigid elements. remember, you deserve this.

no one should have to endure winter alone. hopefully these simple tips will help you have the best winter season yet. i have tried to cover the basics as thoroughly as possible on this short list, but please share any important exclusions.
